Although, wall texturing needs some artistic qualities, it can be practiced skillfully by anyone if guided properly.
There are many techniques to decorate wall interiors, such as painting, wallpapering, wall covering, etc. Wall texturing is one of the most popular approaches to decorate interior of home walls. If you are interested in performing wall texturing all by yourself, you need two things, motivation and persistent determination. If you have an additional artistic quality, it is going to help even better. Before starting to design your wall texture, you should take into account some major points. You should have knowledge about some basic needs of the job like kind of texture compound, amount of water to be mixed, sand and its amount, kinds of tools used, nature of the surface and color to be added. Like painting and other wall decorating techniques, wall texturing also needs some preparation of walls. Preparation of walls and ceilings is the most important part of the texturing process. Although, texturing covers lots of flaws and defects of the surface, it will be better to get them eliminated.
There are many kinds of texture compounds available in the market. You can buy one that seems suitable for you. For example, you can buy multipurpose joint compound, which is popularly used in wall texturing job. Put that compound into a different pot and thin it some. You should keep track of the amount of water you use, so that you can copy the first batch when you make another one. You can also buy pre-mixed texture compounds in the plastic boxes ready to use. Texture compounds are also available in powder form. If you have a large area to texture, the use of texture powder would be the best. Use a mud masher to mix them with water. Soak the solution overnight. Next day, mix it more for the removal of lumps and add water. If you plan to use texture compound, thin it by using the electric drill or a masher. Be careful, do not mix too much air in the mixture, since it causes bubbles.
Next task is to determine the amount of water to be added. For this purpose, set aside little quantity of compound and add some measured amount of water. Stir it and observe the effect. When you get your wanted results, do the same with the rest of the compound. Sand is used to obtain the old plaster look. Another advantage of sand is that it makes the mud easier to work. If the texture requires a uniform depth, then use of sand is a good idea. Sand enables you to maintain a minimum thickness of the solution. Tools are very necessary to accomplish this job. You need a paint roller, large paint brush, 3-knot roofing tar brush, sponges and rags. Some tools need more than one tool, because those are more than one staged applications. The next step is that you should have knowledge about the nature of working surface. On a porous and non-primed surface, the texture is mixed differently than a painted surface. Moreover, working over a painted wall is easier and less stressful than doing it over a porous surface. Next stage is the addition of color. Some people add color tinting material to the wall texture. This technique is not suitable for walls, rather it can be used for ceilings, since the ceiling cannot be harmed. Tinted wall texture should not be practiced in high traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Just put on your un-tinted wall texture and paint it with your wanted color.
